Upcoming Kindergarten Registration for New Students
We need your help! Please spread the word about our upcoming kindergarten registration to anyone who may have a child/grandchild who will be attending this fall. The dates for registration are May 5 or May 12 from 1:00 – 3:00 PM. If registration is not possible on the assigned date, please call the school’s office. The following information is needed to register: birth certificate with state seal, copy of social security card, record of physical exam dated between August 7, 2016 – August 7, 2017, an official Tennessee Certificate of Immunization from the healthcare provider, and proof of residency (utility bill). You may also want to visit our school district’s website at www.hck12.net under the link “families” and then “registering new students” for more information and any forms needed. Any student entering kindergarten must have reached his or her 5th birthday by August 15, 2017. It is very important that registration is done on time so we are prepared and know how many teachers will be needed for the coming year.
As we make preparations for next year’s classes, we are accepting parent requests for homeroom teachers beginning April 4. However, requests cannot be guaranteed due to many factors. Students must be evenly distributed by ability level, behavior, individual needs, etc. Requests are limited to first choice only. All requests must be written and submitted to the office by April 21.
Support Staff Appreciation Day
We are excited to celebrate Secretary/Instructional Assistant Appreciation Day on April 6. Please let our secretary, data manager, and instructional assistants know how much we appreciate them. They are wonderful!!!!!!
Please make sure your child’s cafeteria account is paid in full with no charges by May 1. Charges are no longer allowed for the remainder of the year and checks will no longer be accepted after April 28.
All library books are due May 1-5 for inventory and collection. If a library book is lost, please pay as soon as possible. Report cards will not be given if money is owed. The AR deadline to meet the last nine weeks goal is May 5. The AR celebration will be held May 9 in the gym. We hope all of our students will meet his or her individual goal for the last nine weeks!
Join us on April 24 for the last PTSO meeting of the year. Parents are invited to help with popcorn on April 6. Special thanks go to PTSO from the cafeteria staff for the new table and chairs. PTSO will never know how much they are appreciated!
Congratulations to Abigail Daniels ($687), Melinda Miller ($1,080), Jessica Hurd ($1,700), and Amy Arnold ($2626) for receiving funding from UTrust grants!!!!!! Great job!
Lost & Found
Please check our lost and found for any missing coats or other items. Most jackets are placed down the cafeteria hall when lost. All items not claimed will be donated to Shepherd’s Center at the end of the year.
TNReady State Testing
TNReady state testing for our second, third and fourth grade students will begin Tuesday, April 18, and continue until Friday, May 5. It is very important that your child does his or her best so a true evaluation is given. Practice websites that teachers have assigned for review. Let’s make this our most successful testing! Our goal is to make straight A’s on the state report card. We want to make our community proud. We can do it!
Computer keyboarding skills are a necessity in today’s technological world. Keyboarding practice is provided on our school’s website. Please encourage your child to practice keyboarding skills as much as possible (especially during the summer) as future state testing will require it.
Teacher of the Year
Surgoinsville Elementary School is honored to announce Mrs. Cindy Childress as the 2017 Teacher of the Year. In addition to being an awesome 4th grade teacher for the past seven years at SES, Mrs. Childress has served as our school’s teacher leader representative for the district, has presented at several school level faculty meetings, and served on several school committees. She is our school’s yearbook sponsor and maintains our school’s website. She mentors new teachers and is always volunteering to help in any way needed. Her dedication to student learning and achievement is evident through consistent high performance on state testing year after year. Mrs. Childress supports student learning by coordinating the Buddy Read morning program. Congratulations, Mrs. Childress!
We have included both the April and May calendars this month for your convenience as you plan and are invited to attend the many events scheduled at the end of the school year. We hope to see you!
