SES Royal Court

Students who achieved homeroom prince/princess are currently selling tickets to earn a place in the 2017 SES Royal Court. Tickets for the Royal Court must be turned into the office by October 18th at 8:30 AM. The royal crowning of each homeroom prince and princess, the royal court, and the king and queen will take place Friday, October 20th at 9:00 AM in the school’s gym. We would like for our Royal Court to wear their crowns/sashes to our Fall Festival that evening.

Fall Festival

Our Fall Festival will take place on Friday, October 20th from 5:00-7:00. Visit us for games, food, and prizes! Some of the games/activities that we will have this year include a haunted house, hairspray paint, grab bags, a pumpkin decorating contest, sucker pull, cookie decorating, goldfish, fortune telling, dart game, rock painting, and much more! We will also have food and drinks available for purchase including cotton candy, popcorn, cupcakes, and pizza. Come join us for a night of entertainment!

Shirt Sale

We are currently taking orders for school shirts. The shirts come in black or gray with a variety of styles. Orders must be submitted by Wednesday, October 4th. This is a great way to show school pride!

Spelling Bee

Congratulations to all of our 4th grade students who participated in our school-wide spelling bee. A special congratulations goes to our 2017-2018 SES Spelling Bee winner, Brennan Greene, and runner-up, Makayla Trivette! Brennan will continue to the next level of competition in the county-wide spelling bee at RMS on October 5th.

Family Engagement

Throughout the year there will be multiple opportunities, activities, and events scheduled to include families and community members. We would love to see you at these future events! For the most up-to-date information, visit our school webpage and/or “like” our Facebook page. You can also find our Family Engagement Plan our school webpage. Our next upcoming events include our 2nd grade Math Night on October 24th and Food Lion Math Night on October 26th at the Church Hill Food Lion.

Afternoon Routines

If your child rides a bus home, please remind them to follow the bus rules for students to have a safe ride home. If your child is a car rider, please use our car rider pick-up line that circles behind the building and display your car rider tag with your child’s number. If your child needs to be picked up early, or if your child will be getting home differently than normal, please let our office staff know as soon as possible. We want to make sure all students receive necessary messages. Please write a note in the planner any time there is a change in routine.

Attendance

Don’t forget that “Strive for less than five” is Hawkins County School’s motto this year to remind families the importance of attendance. We encourage students to have less than five absences this school year. It is extremely important that students be at school to receive instruction and be engaged in learning in the classroom. Should it be necessary that your child is absent, please use the form provided in your child’s planner (unless it is a doctor’s excuse). Excuses are not accepted after five school days upon the student’s return, and the student will be written as unexcused. Only five parent notes are allowed per semester. Early dismissals / tardies accumulate and can result in a day’s absence. Once all parent notes are used, days will then be unexcused unless there is a doctor’s note.

Walk and Learn

Now that students have completed AimsWeb Benchmark Testing, Walk and Learn groups have officially restarted. All students receive daily instruction or enrichment for 30-45 minutes. Students are placed into groups based on their individual needs forReading/Math. Thank you for supporting your child as well by practicing skills at home. Students greatly benefit from activities such as reading aloud and practicing basic math facts for fluency. We also have a parent lending library available for games and activities if you would like to check out materials for additional skills practice at home. Please contact your child’s teacher if you are interested.

PTSO

We have several PTSO activities going on during the month of October.  The next PTSO popcorn/drink day will be on October 5th. PTSO will also be accepting ghost sucker orders during the week of October 23-27, with the suckers being delivered on October 31st for Halloween. PTSO will be sponsoring a Halloween Dance on the evening of October 27th. We can’t wait to see our students dressed up in their Halloween costumes! Our next meeting will be on Monday, October 16th at 3:30 in the library. Please join us! If you would like to volunteer at a PTSO event, please write your child’s teacher a note, and a PTSO representative will contact you. Thank you!
