September Newsletter

September 2017 Principal’s Newsletter

Beginning of the Year

Students and staff have had a wonderful start to the new school year and working hard each and every day! We want to thank you for all your support and help in making the beginning of the school year successful.

Home/School Communication

Student planners have arrived, and students should be bringing home planners daily. Please check your child’s planner each night, sign, and leave a note for the teacher if necessary. This is an excellent form of communication between home and school.

Reading for Education Booklets

Thank you so much for your help with our Reading for Education fundraiser! Through your support of completing addresses and returning booklets, our school earned $1,116.50 to assist in the education of our students.

Science Fair / TNReady Night

Information went home recently about our upcoming Science Fair. Students are learning about the scientific method in their classes and are encouraged to submit a project for the Science Fair. Projects will be judged on Wednesday, September 27th. The projects will also be on display during our Science Fair/TNReady Night on Thursday, September 28th from 5:00-7:00. Please join us to celebrate and gain information about the TNReady assessment.

Family Engagement

Throughout the year, there will be multiple opportunities, activities, and events scheduled to include families and community members. We would love to see you at these future events! For the most up-to-date information, visit our school webpage and/or “like” our Facebook page. You may also find our Family Engagement Plan our school webpage.

McTeacher Night

SES will have a McTeacher Night at the Church Hill McDonalds on September 26th from 5:00-8:00. Our school receives 30% from purchases during the event. Please come by that evening, feed your family, and support our school!

Afternoon Routines

If your child rides a bus home, please remind them to follow the bus rules in order for students to have a safe ride home. If your child is a car rider, please use our car rider pick-up line that circles behind the building and display your car rider tag with your child’s number. If your child needs to be picked up early, or if your child will be getting home differently than normal, please let our office staff know as soon as possible. It can get very busy in the office at the end of the day, and we want to make sure all students receive necessary messages to get home accordingly. It can be difficult when messages are being received as we are dismissing. Families may also write a note in the planner any time there is a change in routine.

September is Attendance Awareness Month, and “Strive for less than five” is Hawkins County School’s motto to remind families the importance of attendance. We encourage students to have less than five absences this school year. It is extremely important that students be at school to receive instruction and be engaged in learning in the classroom. Should it be necessary that your child is absent, please use the form provided in your child’s planner (unless it is a doctor’s excuse). Excuses are not accepted after five school days upon the student’s return, and the student will be written as unexcused. Only five parent notes are allowed per semester. Early dismissals / tardies accumulate and can result in a day’s absence. Once all parent notes are used, days will then be unexcused unless there is a doctor’s note.

Fall Benchmark Testing

Students will be taking the AimsWeb Fall Benchmark Tests for grade-level  literacy and math skills. These allow us to determine each student’s areas of strength and need, and in turn place them in the appropriate Walk and Learn group. You will receive a report from your child’s teacher with their test results. We also have a parent lending library available for games and activities if you would like to check out materials for additional skills practice at home. Please contact your child’s teacher if you are interested.

Please continue to help our school by collecting General Mills Box Tops. Also register for programs at Food City, Target, and Office Depot for a percentage of the proceeds of your sale to be donated to Surgoinsville Elementary School. Ask your family, friends, neighbors, and church members to help as well. If you are willing to help with any of our school collection processes, please contact the school.

School Shirt Sale

School shirts will be available for purchase September 18th through October 5th. There will be a variety of styles (t-shirt, long sleeve, hoodie, or zip-up hoodie) and will be available in black or charcoal gray. Show your school pride!

Bus Driver Appreciation Day

Help us show appreciation for our bus drivers on September 21st by dressing in a Nashville theme! You may wear your country music attire such as cowboy boots, cowboy hats, a shirt with your favorite country musician, and/or dress as a country music star. Please remember to follow the dress code and dress appropriately.

Thank you to those who attended our first PTSO meeting on August 28th. The following PTSO officers were re-elected for the 2017-2018 school year: Margaret Childress (President); Tabatha Livesay (Vice President); Christine Goodman (Secretary); Debbie Barrett and Sandra McDavid (Treasurers).
