Winter Weather

As winter weather approaches, please be sure that you have returned the early dismissal form to your child’s teacher. These forms were sent home at the beginning of the school year. In case of early dismissal, this helps us know how your child needs to get home safely. You can also find information on school closings on the Hawkins County Website, www.hck12.net, and/or tuning in to your local news and radio stations. Calls will also be sent out through the county’s Skylert phone system in case of changes due to weather.

 

Family Engagement

Throughout the year there will be multiple opportunities, activities, and events scheduled to include families and community members. We would love to see you at these future events! Thank you to those who attended our Science Fair/TNReady Night, 2nd Grade Math Night, and Food Lion Math Night and helped make it a success! For the most up-to-date information, visit our school webpage and/or “like” our Facebook page. You can also find our Family Engagement Plan our school webpage. Our next upcoming events include our Literacy Night on Tuesday, November 14th.

 

Afternoon Routines

If your child rides a bus home, please remind them to follow the bus rules for students to have a safe ride home. If your child is a car rider, please use our car rider pick-up line that circles behind the building and display your car rider tag with your child’s number. If your child needs to be picked up early, or if your child will be getting home differently than normal, please let our office staff know as soon as possible. We want to make sure all students receive necessary messages. Please write a note in the planner any time there is a change in routine.

 

Attendance

Don’t forget that “Strive for less than five” is Hawkins County School’s motto this year to remind families the importance of attendance. We encourage students to have less than five absences this school year. It is extremely important that students be at school to receive instruction and be engaged in learning in the classroom. Should it be necessary that your child is absent, please use the form provided in your child’s planner (unless it is a doctor’s excuse). Excuses are not accepted after five school days upon the student’s return, and the student will be written as unexcused. Only five parent notes are allowed per semester. Early dismissals / tardies accumulate and can result in a day’s absence. Once all parent notes are used, days will then be unexcused unless there is a doctor’s note.

 

Parent Lending Library

Thank you for supporting your child as well by practicing skills at home. Students greatly benefit from activities such as reading aloud and practicing basic math facts for fluency. We also have a parent lending library available for games and activities if you would like to check out materials for additional skills practice at home. Please contact your child’s teacher if you are interested.

 

PTSO

The next PTSO popcorn/drink day will be on November 2nd. PTSO will be sponsoring a dance on the evening of November 9th. Our next meeting will be on Monday, November 20th at 3:30 in the library. Please join us! If you would like to volunteer at a PTSO event, please write your child’s teacher a note, and a PTSO representative will contact you. Thank you!
