Teacher Appreciation Day

Teacher Appreciation Day is Thursday, May 4. Please show your child’s teacher how much he or she is appreciated! All teachers are working extremely hard this year making sure each student shows gains in academic growth. Surgoinsville Elementary School has the BEST teachers in Hawkins County! They are wonderful!!!!

Kindergarten Early Dismissal

Kindergarten registration for Hawkins County Schools will be on Friday, May 5 and 12, from 1:00-3:00 PM.   We will be dismissing kindergarten students at 12:00 PM on each of these days so that kindergarten teachers may assist with the registration process.

Kindergarten Registration

We need your help! Please spread the word about our upcoming kindergarten registration to anyone who may have a child/grandchild who will be attending this fall. The dates for registration are May 5 or May 12 from 1:00 – 3:00 PM. If registration is not possible on the assigned date, please call the school’s office. The following information is needed to register: birth certificate with state seal, copy of social security card, record of physical exam dated between August 7, 2016 – August 7, 2017, an official Tennessee Certificate of Immunization from the healthcare provider, and proof of residency (utility bill). You may also want to visit our school district’s website at www.hck12.net under the link “families” and then “registering new students” for more information and any forms needed. Any student entering kindergarten must have reached his or her 5th birthday by August 15, 2017. It is very important that registration is done on time so we are prepared and know how many teachers will be needed for the coming year.

Lost & Found

Please check our lost and found for any missing coats or other items. Most jackets are placed down the cafeteria hall when lost. All items not claimed will be donated to Shepherd’s Center at the end of the year.

Cafeteria News

Please make sure your child’s cafeteria account is paid in full. All charges need to be paid and are no longer allowed for the remainder of the year. Checks will no longer be accepted.

Library Books Due

All library books are due May 1-5 for inventory and collection. If a library book is lost, please pay as soon as possible. Report cards will not be given if money is owed.

AIMSweb Benchmark Testing

All students in grades K-4 have completed AIMSweb benchmark testing to show academic growth in math, reading fluency and comprehension.   We are excited to see how much smarter our students have become this year! Parents will receive the results with the child's report card.

Honor’s Day

We are pleased to celebrate Honor’s Day on May 23 at 12:30 PM for students in grades 3-4 and 1:30 PM for grades 1-2 who have made honor roll each nine weeks or who had perfect attendance for the entire school year. Please make every effort to attend. Invitations will be sent. There will also be a kindergarten celebration/graduation on May 22 at 6:00 PM.

Summer Practice

Please remember to review important skills throughout the summer. Continue to read on a daily basis and learn or review addition, subtraction, and/or multiplication facts. Don’t forget to practice keyboarding skills by going to www.typingweb.com or visiting the school’s website. Play educational games. The revised standards require more rigorous and challenging work.

Principal’s Retirement

After almost 33 years as an educator in Hawkins County, serving ten of those years as principal of Surgoinsville Elementary School, I will be retiring at the end of this school year. As I write my last principal’s newsletter, I feel much gratitude to the students, teachers, staff, parents, and community of Surgoinsville Elementary School.   I have truly appreciated your encouragement and support. Without your help, our school would not be the success it is today.   It has been a privilege and an honor to work with each of you. I wish you, as always, much happiness and the absolute very best….
