Candy Sale Fundraiser

Information about our second semester fundraiser is included in your child’s Communication Folder. We will kick-off our Candy Sale Fundraiser on Wednesday, January 31st and it will end on Wednesday, February 14th. A percentage of each candy item sold will directly benefit our school, classrooms, and students. Please help our school by returning the permission slip at the bottom of the information letter that has been sent home in order for your child to receive a box of candy to sell. Students will earn prizes for each box sold and be entered into a drawing for a new tablet. The overall top seller will win $100. We greatly appreciate your support for our school!

Congratulations

Congratulations to one of our fourth graders, Jackson Helton, for representing our school well at the Hawkins County

4-H Public Speaking Contest. Jackson was awarded a blue ribbon in the county-wide competition. We are proud of you!

Winter Weather

As winter weather continues, please be sure that you have returned the early dismissal form to your child’s teacher. These forms were sent home at the beginning of the school year. In case of early dismissal, this helps us know how your child needs to get home safely. You can also find information on school closings on the Hawkins County Website, www.hck12.net, and/or tuning in to your local news and radio stations. Calls will also be sent out through the district’s Skylert phone system in case of changes due to weather.

PTSO Valentine Gift Sale

PTSO will be taking orders for Valentine gifts from January 29th through February 8th with gifts being delivered to students on Valentine’s Day, February 14th. You are encouraged to include a note on the order form, which will be attached to the gift. Each gift ordered is required to have a separate order form.

PTSO Valentine’s Dance

There will be a PTSO Valentine’s Dance on Friday, February 16th from 5:00-7:00. The cost for entrance into the dance is $3.00 with concessions also available for purchase. Kindergarten and first grade students must be accompanied by an adult. This adult will receive free admission.

Student Appreciation Day

We have the BEST students at Surgoinsville Elementary School! Our staff and PTSO will be rolling out the red carpet and showing our appreciation by hosting a special day for our students on Friday, February 16th.

Afternoon Routines

If your child rides a bus home, please remind them to follow the bus rules for students to have a safe ride home. If your child is a car rider, please use our car rider pick-up line that circles behind the building and display your car rider tag with your child’s number. If your child needs to be picked up early, or if your child will be getting home differently than normal, please let our office staff know as soon as possible. We want to make sure all students receive necessary messages. Please write a note in the planner any time there is a change in routine.

Attendance

Don’t forget that “Strive for less than five” is Hawkins County School’s motto this year to remind families the importance of attendance. We encourage students to have less than five absences this school year. It is extremely important that students be at school to receive instruction and be engaged in learning in the classroom. Should it be necessary that your child is absent, please use the form provided in your child’s planner (unless it is a doctor’s excuse). Excuses are not accepted after five school days upon the student’s return, and the student will be written as unexcused. Only five parent notes are allowed per semester. Early dismissals / tardies accumulate and can result in a day’s absence. Once all parent notes are used, days will then be unexcused unless there is a doctor’s note.

Parent Lending Library

Thank you for supporting your child as well by practicing skills at home. Students greatly benefit from activities such as reading aloud and practicing basic math facts for fluency. We also have a parent lending library available for games and activities if you would like to check out materials for additional skills practice at home. Please contact your child’s teacher if you are interested.
