February 2019 Principal’s Newsletter
Weather Changes
During winter weather, please be sure that the early dismissal form that was returned to your teacher at the beginning of the year is up to date. In case of early dismissal, this helps us know how your child needs to get home safely. You can also find information on school closings and schedule changes on the Hawkins County Schools Website, www.hck12.net , and/or tuning in to your local news and radio stations. Calls will also be sent out through the county’s Skylert phone system in case of changes due to weather.
Pack Shirts and Points
As a reminder, students are to wear their pack shirts each Friday for our awarding of points ceremony. Students earn points for their pack through academics, attendance, positive behavior, and random acts of kindness. We hope that students will show their pack pride each Friday morning, and continue to do their BEST each and every day!
PTSO Updates
PTSO is sponsoring a Valentine’s Day Dance on Friday, February 8th from 5:00-7:00. The next popcorn/drink day will be on February 7th. Envelopes are provided for each student to return their money. The next PTSO meeting will take place on Thursday, February 21st at 3:30. Pack Points will be awarded to the homeroom with the most representatives. If you would like to volunteer at a PTSO event, please write your child’s teacher a note, and a PTSO representative will contact you. Thank you!
Science Fair / Family Engagement
Our next Family Engagement event will be our Science Fair / TNReady information Night on March 5th from 5:00-6:00. Details, criteria, and prize information is included on a flyer being sent home with students. All Science Fair participants will be included in a special reward with Mrs. Smith and entered into a drawing for a new TV. Science Fair awards and TV winner will be announced the evening of March 5th. Each student who attends that evening will also earn two points for their pack.
For the most up-to-date family engagement information, visit our school webpage and/or “like” our Facebook page. You can also find our Family Engagement Plan on our school webpage. Please remember we have a parent lending library available for educational games and activities if you would like to check out materials for additional skills practice at home. Check with your child’s teacher if you are interested.
Box Top Movie Night
Our next Box Top Movie Night will take place on Friday, February 22nd from 5:00-7:00 for students who have brought in 25 Box Tops. We are very close to meeting our goal for this year, so please continue to send those in.
Spreading Positivity!
Show some love! Kids thrive under positive reinforcement and praise. Take a moment and let your child know just how awesome you think they are. You can write a note or two and place it in their lunchbox or maybe write a few messages and hide them around the house. We all respond better to praise, so show those awesome kiddos some love!
Afternoon Routines
If your child rides a bus home, please remind them to follow the bus rules for students to have a safe ride home. If your child is a car rider, please use our car rider pick-up line that circles behind the building and display your car rider tag with your child’s number. If your child needs to be picked up early, or if your child will be getting home differently than normal, please let our office staff know as soon as possible. We want to make sure all students receive necessary messages. Please write a note in the planner any time there is a change in routine.
Attendance
One class will earn a reward party for having the most perfect attendance days for the month of February! Don’t forget that “Strive for less than five” is HawkinsCountySchool’s motto this year to remind families the importance of attendance. We encourage students to have less than five absences this school year. It is extremely important that students be at school to receive instruction and be engaged in learning in the classroom. Should it be necessary that your child is absent, please use the form provided in your child’s planner (unless it is a doctor’s excuse). Excuses are not accepted after five school days upon the student’s return, and the student will be written as unexcused. Only five parent notes are allowed per semester. Early dismissals / tardies accumulate and can result in a day’s absence. Once all parent notes are used, days will then be unexcused unless there is a doctor’s note.
